Las dos únicas formas del verbo to have son have y has.

Veamos algunas frases con el verbo to have:

I have a red car. -> Yo tengo un coche rojo.
She has two cats. -> Ella tiene dos gatos.
They have read a book.

Contracciones del verbo to have

Normal Contracciones

POSITIVO: Es el adjetivo en su forma simple, básica: nice, lindo; big, grande; COMPARATIVO: Establece la relación o comparación entre dos cosas;

COMPARATIVOS
DE IGUALDAD

AFIRMATIVO AS + adjective + AS = TAN + adjetivo + COMO

This book is as interesting as that magazine.
Buenos Aires is as expensive as Tokyo
Buenos Aires es tan cara como Tokio.

NEGATIVO NOT AS + adjective + AS = NO TAN + adjetivo + COMO

This flat is not as big as that house.
Paris is not as expensive as Tokyo

adjective + ER + THAN = MAS + adjetivo + QUE

This book is cheaper than that magazine.

MORE + adjective + THAN = MAS + adjetivo + QUE

Paris is more interesting than Los Angeles.

less expensive than, menos caro que; less intelligent than, menos inteligente que.

SUPERLATIVOS

This book is the most expensive, este libro es el más caro.

La Rioja is the least expensive province in Argentina, La Rioja es la provincia argentina menos cara.

Present Progressive

The present progressive is formed by combining the verb "to be" with the present participle. (The present participle is merely the "-ing" form of a verb.)

I am studying.
I am studying with María.

In English, present progressive can be used to describe what is happening now, or what will happen in the future.

I am studying now.
I am studying with María tonight.

In Spanish, the present progressive is only used to describe an action that is in the process of taking place. It is not used for future actions.

I am studying now.
(use present progressive)

I am studying with María tonight.
(do not use present progressive)
To form the present progressive, simply conjugate the verb estar to agree with the subject of the sentence, and follow it with the present participle.

Juan está comiendo pan.
John is eating bread.

María y Carmen están hablando con nosotros.
Mary and Carmen are speaking with us.

Remember, only use the present progressive for actions that are "in progress." Compare the uses of the present indicative with the uses of the present progressive.

Estudio español. (Present Indicative)

I study Spanish.
I am studying Spanish (these days).
I do study Spanish.

Estoy estudiando español. (Present Progressive)

I am studying (right now, at this moment) Spanish.

It is important to remember that you would never use the present progressive to say something like "We are going to Spain this summer." Use present progressive only for actions that are "in progress."

I can play tennis. Yo puedo jugar al tenis
He can open the window. El puede abrir la ventana

El verbo "can" no tiene infinitivo (no existe "to can"); tan sólo tiene presente ("can") y pasado ("could"). Para construir el futuro se utiliza la combinación "to be able" (ser capaz) en su forma futura.

I can listen to music. Yo puedo oír música
I could listen to music. Yo podía oír música
I will be able to listen music. Yo podré oír música

Asimismo, para formar los tiempos compuestos y continuos, hay que recurrir igualmente a la combinación "to be able" en sus tiempos respectivos.

Present perfect I have been able to listen music.
Present continuous I am being able to listen music.
Past perfect I had been able to listen music.

La forma negativas de "can" en presente es "can not" (o su abreviada "can't") y en pasado "could not" (o su abreviada "couldn't").

I cannot go to the party. Yo no puedo ir a la fiesta
She couldn't carry the suitcase. Ella no podía llevar la maleta.

En las frases interrogativas "can" se coloca al comienzo de la interrogación, con una estructura similar a la que vimos para los verbos "to be" y "to have".

Can you come with us? ¿ Puedes tú venir con nosotros ?
Could she finish her work? ¿ Pudo ella finalizar su trabajo ?

Los adverbios de frecuencia responden a la pregunta "How often?" or "How

We usually go shopping on Saturday. Solemos ir de compras los sábados.

I have often done that. Lo he hecho a menudo.

She is always late. Siempre llega tarde.

Sometimes they come and stay with us A veces vienen y se quedan con nosotros.

I play tennis occasionally. Juego al tenis de vez en cuando.

Rarely and seldom también pueden ir a final de frase (a menudo con "very"):

We see them rarely. Rara vez los vemos.

My children eat fish very seldom Mis hijos apenas comen pescado.
